Wisteria sinensis, commonly known as Chinese wisteria, is a vigorous, deciduous climbing vine that can grow 10-20 meters (33-66 feet) long. It has woody stems that twine counterclockwise and produce cascades of fragrant, violet to bluish-purple flowers in spring. The flowers appear in hanging clusters 15-30 centimeters (6-12 inches) long before the foliage fully emerges. Its leaves are pinnate, with 7-13 oval leaflets, giving it a delicate, lacy appearance.
