Description
Arenga engleri, commonly known as the dwarf sugar palm or Formosa palm, is a small, clumping palm that typically reaches a height of 2–5 meters (6–16 feet). It has multiple slender, ringed trunks and a dense crown of pinnate fronds that are 1–3 meters (3–9 feet) long. The fronds are dark green on top and silver underneath, creating a striking visual contrast. This palm produces fragrant, yellowish flowers and small, dark-red fruits.
Native to Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, the dwarf sugar palm thrives in well-drained soils and prefers partial to full shade, though it can tolerate some sun. It is moderately drought-resistant, wind-tolerant, and cold-hardy, enduring temperatures down to -6°C (21°F). Its compact size, attractive foliage, and resilience make it an excellent choice for small gardens, tropical landscaping, and container planting in subtropical and temperate climates.
