Description
Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as giant white bird of paradise, is a large, evergreen, tropical plant that grows 6-10 meters (20-33 feet) tall. It forms clumps of tall, banana like stems with large, paddle shaped, dark green leaves up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) long. It produces white and dark blue flowers.
Native to coastal forests of South Africa, it thrives in rich, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It is moderately drought-tolerant and wind-resistant. Due to its size and tropical look, it is often used as an ornamental in warm climates and large landscapes. It also grows well in large containers indoors or on patios in cooler regions.
