Description
Dracaena draco, commonly known as the dragon tree is a tree-like plant that can reach heights of 10–15 meters (33–50 feet). It has a thick, branching trunk that forms an umbrella-shaped canopy of stiff, sword-like leaves. The leaves are blue-green, 45–60 centimeters (18–24 inches) long, and form dense rosettes at the tips of the branches. When mature, it produces orange-red fruits. Its sap, known as “dragon’s blood,” turns red when exposed to air.
Native to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and parts of Madeira, the dragon tree thrives in rocky, well-drained soils and full sun. It is extremely drought-tolerant and wind-resistant, adapted to arid coastal and mountainous habitats. This plant can endure short cold spells down to around -5°C (23°F).
