Description

Phoenix roebelenii, commonly known as the pygmy date palm, is a small, elegant palm that typically grows to a height of 1.5–3 meters (5–10 feet), making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes or container planting. It has a slender, textured trunk and an attractive crown of arching, feathery fronds that reach 1–1.5 meters (3–5 feet) in length. The dark green leaflets are finely spaced, giving the fronds a delicate appearance. This palm also produces small yellowish flowers and tiny, purple-black fruits, although they are not commonly consumed.

Native to Southeast Asia, the pygmy date palm thrives in well-drained soils and can tolerate partial shade, although it prefers full sun. It is moderately drought-tolerant and does well in protected areas with minimal wind exposure. This palm can handle cold temperatures down to -3°C (27°F) for short periods but should be sheltered from prolonged frost.
