Description
Archontophoenix alexandrae (Alexander Palm or King Palm)
Habitat: Alexander Palms are native to the rainforests and coastal regions of northeastern Queensland, Australia. They thrive in moist, tropical, and subtropical climates where there is high humidity and abundant rainfall. In cultivation, they are commonly planted in warm coastal areas or regions with similar environmental conditions.
Outstanding Features: The most striking feature of the Alexander Palm is its tall, smooth, grey trunk, topped with a crown of large, pinnate fronds. The fronds arch gracefully, giving the palm a regal and tropical appearance. It produces small white flowers followed by bright red fruits, adding to its ornamental value. The smooth, green crownshaft at the top of the trunk is another defining characteristic.
General Appearance: Alexander Palms can grow up to 50 to 60 feet in height with a trunk diameter of 6 to 12 inches. The trunk is smooth and grey, with prominent rings marking old leaf scars. Its feathery fronds are up to 10 feet long, with glossy green leaflets arranged along a central axis. The palm produces clusters of white flowers, followed by small, round, red fruits that are about 0.5 inches in diameter.
Applications: This palm is widely used as an ornamental tree in tropical and subtropical gardens, streetscapes, and parks. Its fast growth and elegant appearance make it a popular choice for lining driveways, creating a tropical ambiance, or serving as a focal point in the landscape. It is also used in container planting for patios and large indoor spaces.
Adaptability: Alexander Palms are relatively adaptable to various growing conditions. They prefer well-drained, rich soils and thrive in full sun to partial shade. Though they are suited to tropical and subtropical climates, they can tolerate mild frost and can be grown in warmer temperate regions. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods. These palms are moderately salt-tolerant, making them suitable for coastal landscapes. They are generally low-maintenance and resistant to most pests and diseases.
