Description
Melia azedarach, commonly called chinaberry tree, is a fast-growing deciduous tree reaching 12 to 15 meters (40 to 50 feet) tall. It develops a rounded crown with a short trunk and smooth bark that turns fissured with age. Its leaves are large, up to 50 cm (20 inches) long, bipinnate, and dark green, giving the tree a dense look. In spring, it produces clusters of small, fragrant, lilac-colored flowers followed by round yellow fruits about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) wide that persist on the tree into winter.
Native to Asia and northern Australia, it thrives in a wide range of soils, including poor and dry ones. It is drought-resistant and tolerates wind well but is only moderately hardy, handling short cold spells down to about -7°C (20°F). It naturalizes easily in warm regions and is commonly planted as a shade or ornamental tree.
