Description
Chamaedorea woodsoniana is a solitary, dioecious feather palm. It ranks among the largest species within its genus. The trunk is robust, green, and prominently ringed with pale, widely spaced leaf scars. The canopy consists of large, pinnate leaves featuring dark green, broad leaflets arranged evenly along the rachis. It produces inflorescences that emerge from among or directly below the leaf bases. Female specimens produce small, globose fruits that ripen to a dark black when mature.
Endemic to the cloud forests and high-elevation wet montane forests of Costa Rica and Panama, this species is associated with cool, moist, and humid environments. In cultivation, it functions as an understory or sub-canopy plant. It requires organically rich, well-draining soils and consistent moisture. It requires partial shade to filtered sunlight, sustaining foliar damage if subjected to prolonged direct sunlight or dry, desiccating winds.
