Cold hardiness -6 °C (21 °F); established specimens tolerate moderate frosts and short periods of freezing temperatures, making it suitable for mild temperate zones.
Growth speed Moderate; juvenile plants grow slowly as they establish their root systems, but vertical trunk development accelerates as the palm matures.
Rarity Occasional in global cultivation; frequently utilized in Southern European and Mediterranean landscaping, but relatively uncommon in standard commercial nurseries outside of temperate or subtropical growing regions.
Maximum height 25 m (82 ft); functions as a tall canopy palm that requires substantial spatial accommodation in landscape designs.
Drought resistance Medium; originates from moist coastal and swampy environments, requiring regular irrigation during extended dry periods to prevent foliar decline.

Description

Livistona australis is a solitary fan palm. The trunk is tall and columnar, frequently marked with vertical fissures and faint leaf scar rings. In juvenile specimens, the trunk retains persistent leaf bases, which eventually weather and fall away to leave a relatively smooth surface on mature trees. The canopy consists of costapalmate leaves that are deeply divided into numerous segments. These segments possess pendulous or drooping tips and exhibit a dark green upper surface with a slightly paler underside. The petioles are armed with recurved spines along their margins, though this armament typically becomes less pronounced on mature foliage. It produces heavily branched inflorescences from among the leaves, which yield small, spherical fruits that ripen to a dark purplish-black.

Endemic to eastern Australia, ranging from Queensland through New South Wales and into eastern Victoria, this species primarily inhabits moist coastal forests, rainforest margins, and swampy gullies. In cultivation, it is adaptable to various soil types and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. It requires adequate moisture but possesses tolerance for cool, temperate climates. It is utilized in landscaping as a canopy or avenue palm.
