Cold hardiness -4 °C (25 °F); established specimens recover well from moderate radiation frosts, but deep, prolonged freezes will cause severe defoliation and potential meristem damage.
Growth speed Fast; establishes a deep root system rapidly and pushes vigorous vertical trunk growth when provided with adequate warmth and sunlight.
Rarity Occasional in cultivation; highly abundant in its native range and agricultural plots, but deliberately restricted in ornamental horticulture due to the physical hazard of its spines.
Maximum height 15 m (50 ft); forms a towering canopy that requires a significant spatial buffer to prevent pedestrians from interacting with the spiny trunk or falling debris.
Drought resistance High; utilizes a deep, extensive root network to reliably endure long, punishing dry seasons with absolutely no supplemental irrigation.

Description

Acrocomia aculeata is a robust, solitary feather palm notorious for the formidable armament that covers nearly its entire structure. The stout, straight trunk is densely armed with rings of long, needle-like black spines, though mature specimens often shed the spines on their lower trunk over time. The expansive canopy consists of arching, gracefully plumose pinnate leaves, with sharp spines extending along the petioles and midribs. As a monoecious species, it produces large, branched inflorescences enclosed in a woody, spiny spathe. These yield heavy clusters of globose, yellowish-green to brown fruits containing a hard, thick endocarp and an oil-rich seed.

Native to a vast expanse of the Neotropics, ranging from southern Mexico and the Caribbean down to Argentina, this species is exceptionally adaptable. It naturally colonizes open savannas, dry forests, and disturbed agricultural lands. Cultivation is remarkably easy, provided the palm receives full, unshaded sunlight and well-draining soil. It thrives in hot, arid conditions and is highly tolerant of poor soils. While its striking, feathery canopy offers excellent tropical aesthetics, its aggressive spines relegate it mostly to large parks, barrier plantings, or agricultural applications rather than intimate residential landscapes.
