Description

Arenga hookeriana is a small, clustering, monoecious palm. The slender stems are often covered with persistent fibrous leaf bases and woven fibers. The canopy consists of pinnate leaves featuring broad, trapezoidal to lanceolate leaflets. The leaflets display a dark green upper surface and a silvery-white glaucous underside. It produces inflorescences from among the leaves, which yield small, globose fruits that ripen to red or dark purple.

Native to the rainforest understories of Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia, this species requires a tropical climate with high humidity. In cultivation, it functions as an understory plant, requiring partial to deep shade to prevent foliar scorching. It requires organically rich, well-draining soil and consistent moisture. It sustains damage if subjected to direct sunlight or dry, desiccating winds.
