Description
Chamaedorea plumosa is a solitary, dioecious feather palm. The trunk is slender, green, and prominently ringed with leaf scars. The canopy consists of pinnate leaves where the leaflets are inserted in multiple planes along the rachis, resulting in a plumose or feathery texture. It produces infrafoliar inflorescences that emerge from the trunk below the leaf bases. Female specimens yield small, globose fruits that ripen to a dark black.
Endemic to the mid-elevation montane forests of Chiapas, Mexico, this species is associated with moist, temperate climates. In cultivation, it requires well-draining soils and consistent moisture. Unlike the majority of species within its genus, it tolerates partial to full sun exposure in coastal or mild climates, though it also functions as an understory plant in shaded environments. It is utilized in landscaping as a slender vertical element in narrow planting spaces.
