Cold hardiness 0 °C (32 °F); mature specimens tolerate brief, light frosts but suffer fatal meristem collapse during extended freezes.
Growth speed Slow; invests significant energy anchoring its root system into rocky substrates before generating noticeable vertical trunk height.
Rarity Rare in cultivation; restricted by habitat loss in the wild and limited availability of viable seed from commercial sources.
Maximum height 10 m (33 ft); functions as a vertical accent suitable for residential spaces without obstructing sightlines.

Description

Coccothrinax proctorii is a solitary fan palm characterized by a slender stem wrapped in fine, woven brown fibers. The canopy consists of deeply divided palmate leaves that feature a bright green adaxial surface and a highly reflective, silvery white underside. As a monoecious species, it produces short inflorescences that remain within the leaf crown, yielding small, globose fruits that ripen to a dark purple or black.

Endemic to the rocky limestone outcroppings and dry coastal scrublands of the Cayman Islands, this species is biologically equipped to endure intense solar radiation, relentless salt spray, and porous, nutrient poor soils. Cultivation demands exceptional drainage and full, unshaded sunlight. It thrives in alkaline substrates and rapidly declines in heavy, waterlogged clay. It serves as an architectural structural element for coastal xeriscapes where its metallic foliage provides visual contrast.
