Description
Coccothrinax proctorii is a solitary fan palm characterized by a slender stem wrapped in fine, woven brown fibers. The canopy consists of deeply divided palmate leaves that feature a bright green adaxial surface and a highly reflective, silvery white underside. As a monoecious species, it produces short inflorescences that remain within the leaf crown, yielding small, globose fruits that ripen to a dark purple or black.
Endemic to the rocky limestone outcroppings and dry coastal scrublands of the Cayman Islands, this species is biologically equipped to endure intense solar radiation, relentless salt spray, and porous, nutrient poor soils. Cultivation demands exceptional drainage and full, unshaded sunlight. It thrives in alkaline substrates and rapidly declines in heavy, waterlogged clay. It serves as an architectural structural element for coastal xeriscapes where its metallic foliage provides visual contrast.
