Cold hardiness -2 °C (28 °F); mature specimens endure brief radiation frosts with minimal foliar damage but suffer severe tissue collapse during prolonged freezes.
Growth speed Slow; invests significant initial energy into developing a massive root network and expanding its trunk girth before generating noticeable vertical height.
Rarity Rare in cultivation; heavily restricted by its vulnerable conservation status in the wild and the sluggish development of seedlings in commercial nurseries.
Maximum height 20 m (65 ft); functions as a substantial vertical element that dominates large residential or commercial landscape designs.
Drought resistance High; naturally adapted to intense seasonal dry periods and requires virtually no supplemental irrigation once firmly established in the soil profile.

Description

Copernicia gigas is a massive, solitary fan palm defined by its exceptionally thick, columnar trunk and immense, rigid crown. The stem can exceed 50 cm (20 in) in diameter, frequently retaining persistent, split petiole bases before weathering to a relatively smooth, grey surface. Its expansive canopy consists of densely packed, deeply segmented palmate leaves that exhibit a stiff, wedge shaped outline. The foliage displays a characteristic green to blue green color, often coated in a protective layer of cuticular wax. As a monoecious species, it produces heavily branched inflorescences that extend past the leaf bases, yielding thousands of small, spherical fruits that ripen to black.

Endemic to the dry savannas, open woodlands, and coastal scrublands of eastern Cuba, this species thrives in environments subject to distinct wet and dry seasons. It is structurally adapted to endure extreme solar radiation and prolonged drought. Cultivation demands full, direct sunlight from the seedling stage onward and exceptionally well-draining soil. It establishes a deep, robust root system capable of penetrating rocky and nutrient poor substrates. Landscapers specify it as a dominant, structural focal point for warm temperate and subtropical xeriscapes, requiring significant spatial clearance to accommodate its massive proportions.
