Description

Latania loddigesii is one of three species in the genus Latania, each restricted to a single island within the Mascarene archipelago. It is closely related to Latania lontaroides (red latan palm) of Réunion and Latania verschaffeltii (yellow latan palm) of Rodrigues, all of which share similar morphology but differ mainly in leaf color, inflorescence structure, and fruit morphology.

The bluish wax coating of L. loddigesii functions as a protective layer, reflecting solar radiation and reducing water loss in its arid native environment. Originally widespread across the coastal lowlands of Mauritius, the species is now extremely rare in the wild, surviving only in a few remnant coastal populations due to extensive habitat destruction and pressure from invasive species. It is assessed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List but is widely conserved in botanical gardens and private collections.

Latania loddigesii is sometimes confused with Bismarckia nobilis

Cold Hardiness: -1 °C (30 °F)
