Description

Livistona australis is a solitary, tall fan palm that can reach up to 25 m (82 ft) in height, typically ranging from 15-25 m (50-82 ft), with a trunk diameter of 30-40 cm (12-16 in). The trunk is straight, gray, and ringed with leaf scars, often retaining a skirt of old leaf bases in younger specimens. The fan-shaped leaves are up to 2 m (6.5 ft) wide, dark green, and borne on petioles armed with small marginal spines. The crown is dense and symmetrical, forming a rounded outline. Inflorescences are long and branched, producing small flowers followed by dark black fruits about 1.5 cm (0.6 in) in diameter.

This species is native to eastern Australia, from Queensland to New South Wales, typically found along coastal forests, river margins, swamps, and rainforest fringes. It grows in areas with high humidity and regular rainfall but can also tolerate short dry periods and occasional flooding. Its natural range makes it one of the southernmost native palms in Australia, and it is well adapted to subtropical and warm-temperate climates.
