Description
Livistona decora, commonly known as the ribbon fan palm or weeping cabbage palm, is a medium to tall palm that can grow up to 15–20 meters (50–65 feet) in height. It features a single, slender trunk with a rough, grayish texture, marked by old leaf bases. Its crown is composed of large, fan-shaped fronds, each reaching 1–2 meters (3–6 feet) in length. The fronds have long, ribbon-like segments that give the palm a unique, decorative appearance. It produces small, creamy-white flowers followed by round, black fruits.
Native to eastern Australia, the ribbon fan palm thrives in sandy, well-drained soils and prefers full sun, although it can tolerate some shade during its early growth stages. It is drought-tolerant, wind-resistant, and moderately resistant to cold, withstanding temperatures down to around -6°C (20°F). These traits, combined with its striking foliage, make it a popular choice for coastal landscaping, urban parks, and ornamental gardens.
