Description
Strelitzia reginae, commonly known as bird of paradise, is a clumping, evergreen plant that grows 1.5-2 meters (5-6.5 feet) tall. It has long, stiff, paddle shaped leaves up to 1 meter (3.3 feet). The flowers have bright orange sepals and vivid blue petals, resembling a bird’s head and beak.
Native to South Africa’s subtropical regions, it grows best in well drained soils with full sun to partial shade. It is moderately drought tolerant, wind resistant, and can survive mild cold down to about -2°C (28°F).
