Description

Sabal causiarum is a fan palm with solitary, very stout, upright stems typically reaching 10-15 m (33-50 ft) in height, occasionally taller in ideal conditions, and 35-70 cm (14-28 in) in diameter. The trunk is gray, columnar, and prominently ringed, with leaf bases that shed early, leaving a smooth, clean surface. The leaves are costapalmate, induplicate, and twisted into several planes, with a strongly arching costa and blades up to 2.5 m (8 ft) wide. Leaf segments are rigid and bear numerous marginal fibers, while the petiole bases are split and unarmed. The species is monoecious.

Inflorescences exceed the leaves in length, arching or pendulous, and are branched to three orders. The flowers are creamy white and bisexual, followed by spherical, black fruits at maturity measuring 8-11 mm (0.3-0.4 in) in diameter.

Cold hardiness: -6 °C (21 °F)
