Description

Cycas revoluta, commonly known as the sago palm or king sago, is a slow-growing, cycad species that typically reaches heights of 1–3 meters (3–10 feet), though it can grow taller over many years. It has a thick, rough, brown trunk that resembles a miniature palm tree and is crowned with stiff, dark green, pinnate fronds. The fronds emerge in a symmetrical, circular pattern, giving the plant a striking, tropical appearance. This species produces cone-like reproductive structures, with male plants forming elongated cones and female plants developing a central crown that bears seeds.

Native to southern Japan, the sago palm thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is highly drought-tolerant, wind-resistant, and moderately cold-hardy, withstanding temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F). Due to its compact size, resilience, and ornamental appeal, it is commonly used in gardens, containers, and landscapes in subtropical and temperate regions. However, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, making caution necessary around pets and children.
