Description
Butia odorata, commonly called jelly palm (sometimes referred to as butia capitata), is a slow growing palm that reaches 4.5 to 9 meters (15 to 30 feet) tall. It has a thick gray trunk and long, arching, bluish-green leaves. It produces yellow to orange fruit about 2.5 to 4 cm (1 to 1.6 inches), with a sweet smell and taste.
Native to Brazil and Uruguay, it grows well in sandy or rocky soils with full sun. It handles drought, wind, and cold down to about -10°C (14°F).
