Description
Jubaea chilensis is a solitary, monoecious feather palm. It is characterized by a columnar, grey trunk that possesses the largest girth of any palm species, frequently exceeding 1 meter in diameter at maturity. The trunk is generally smooth, displaying faint leaf scar rings, and often exhibits a slight taper or narrowing near the canopy. The crown consists of stiff, pinnate leaves with dull green to glaucous leaflets arranged in a rigid V-shape along the rachis. The petioles lack spines or teeth. It produces inflorescences from among the lower leaves, which yield round, yellow-to-orange fruits containing a hollow seed.
Endemic to the Mediterranean climate zones of central Chile, this species inhabits dry ravines, steep slopes, and coastal ridges. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and well-draining soil profiles. It possesses a high tolerance for cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. It is utilized in temperate and subtropical landscaping as a large-scale structural canopy palm.
