Description
Syagrus romanzoffiana is a solitary, monoecious feather palm. The trunk is columnar, light grey, and marked with widely spaced leaf scar rings. The canopy consists of pinnate leaves characterized by a plumose arrangement, in which the linear leaflets are inserted into the rachis at multiple angles, creating a three-dimensional, feathery appearance. It produces large, woody, boat-shaped spathes that open to reveal heavily branched inflorescences. These yield dense clusters of globose to ovoid fruits that ripen to a bright orange and possess a fibrous, sticky, sweet mesocarp.
Native to South America, with a natural range encompassing Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina, this species inhabits diverse environments ranging from coastal woodlands to inland riverbanks. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and well-draining soil. It is adaptable to various soil profiles but exhibits a high susceptibility to manganese and potassium deficiencies when planted in highly alkaline substrates. It is utilized extensively in subtropical and mild temperate landscaping as a fast-growing canopy palm.
