Description
Wodyetia bifurcata is a solitary, monoecious feather palm. The trunk is smooth, grey, closely ringed with leaf scars, and frequently exhibits a swollen or slightly bottle-shaped profile. It features a distinct, pale green crownshaft. The canopy consists of arching pinnate leaves characterized by a dense, plumose arrangement. The individual leaflets are bifurcated, or divided at the tips, radiating outward at multiple angles from the rachis to create a full, cylindrical structure. It produces branched, infrafoliar inflorescences from beneath the crownshaft, which yield large, ovoid fruits that ripen to an orange-red.
Endemic to the Melville Range in Queensland, Australia, this species naturally inhabits rocky granite outcroppings and open woodlands subject to a seasonally dry monsoon climate. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and rapidly draining soils, declining rapidly if planted in heavy, waterlogged clay. It is utilized in subtropical and tropical landscaping as a mid-sized canopy or avenue palm.
